In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Thomas Daniel was running late for his school bus one day earlier this year, but Officer Austin Lynema, fortunately, was nearby, and spotted young Thomas running to try to catch his bus. He wasn’t able to, so the officer gave him a ride to school in his patrol car.
On that ride to school, Thomas told the officer that he was having a birthday party at his house tomorrow and invited the officer there. Thomas also told him that he was often bullied in school, and there was a good chance that no one would show up for his party.
The next day, Officer Lynema made sure he was at Thomas’ house for the party. Sadly, as Thomas expected, no one else showed up for it.
The officer knew the birthday boy, now a 9-year-old, was very hurt by that. So the next day, he did something about it. He and a few of his fellow officers showed up at Thomas’ house with a Krispy Kreme birthday cake, presents and even a singing quartet to sing to him. Thomas said it was his best birthday ever.
And who could argue with that?
