For Georgina Price and fiancee Christopher Lardner, there’s no question of dog or cat. It’s definitely a cat thing. Their first rescue was named Herbie, and they loved him so much. He was a pretty old cat when they got him, and he died only a couple of months after being with them.
But Georginia and Christopher knew that they had plenty of love left in their hearts for other cats. So they looked again. But they didn’t particularly want to spend their time with young, healthy kittens. Herbie knew he was loved in his last days by Georgina and Christopher. So the couple was looking for one of those very special cats.
Says Georgina: “I just kept thinking about all the animals that might only have five months left and would spend the whole of that time in a shelter. We decided we would look for an extra special cat that might take a little longer to find a home.”
When the couple searched online for a cat that would fit their needs, they came across a pair that needed to be homed together. One, Quinton, was a 7-year-old missing a lot of its teeth; the other was 6-year-old Toby, which had a tremendous amount of loose skin. The two cats just perfect for the couple… they could now have a little family.
The couple quickly learned that Toby’s loose skin is the result of a rare condition and that they would have to watch him carefully in case his belly started drooping too low, which would cause damage to his skin. Didn’t matter; the couple was definitely up for the challenge.
They really wanted Quinton and Toby to be a part of their family and they knew they could give them a very loving home. Thing is, when Georgina and Christopher went to get the cats, Toby and Quinton were just terrified of them; they had not had a very good time around people. So it took some time after the adoptions, and quite a bit of food and loving, but Toby and Quinton finally came around and began enjoying their time with Georgina and Christopher.
Says Georgina: “Now they own the place. They just do whatever they want and act mad when you turn the light on if they’re asleep on the bed or something.”
And now Toby and Quinton like to run and jump around, snuggling, belly rubs and bird watching. It’s just like they are where they were always meant to be.
Adds Georgina: “It doesn’t take any more to love them and despite whatever it is that may make them ‘special needs’, they are still beautiful animals with their own amazing personalities, likes, dislikes, and the ability to love you back.”
