When you get married, people bring you gifts. They DO! It’s COOL! But when Brandon and Kathy got married, their aunt Allison gave them a very special gift. A note on the outside of it said DO NOT OPEN UNTIL YOUR FIRST DISAGREEMENT.
Now, many of us might have believed that rule was in play the very next day after the wedding. Hey, it happens. But this one couple here, Kathy and Brandon, lasted several years before cracking open the gift. Now, that doesn’t mean they didn’t have a few minor tiffs along the way, but they refused to give in; they refused to give up on themselves and their love for each other…. so they kept putting off opening the mysterious box.
Says Kathy: “I honestly think that we both avoided turning to the box, because it would have symbolized our failure. To us, it would have meant that we didn’t have what it takes to make our marriage work… and we’re both too stubborn and determined for that. So, it forced us to reassess situations. Was it really time to open the box? What if this isn’t our worst fight? What is there’s a worse one ahead of us and we don’t have our box?”
But one night, after nine years of marriage, some things changed. After putting their kids to bed, Brandon and Kathy were having a glass of wine and started discussing plans to attend another couple’s wedding. And they talked about what they could buy that couple as a gift. And then they started reminiscing about their OWN wedding day, and what gift meant the most to them. And that gift was still sitting in the back of their closet, never opened. So, with that, they agreed to open the box together and finally find out once and for all what was so special inside it that they could give someone else. And inside the box… the special wedding gift… were two handwritten notes, one addressed to each of them.
On Kathy’s note, it advised her to go get a pizza or some shrimp or something they both like. And to get a bath ready.
On Brandon’s note, it advised him to go get some flowers and buy a bottle of wine.
Both notes were wrapped around some money to buy those suggestions with. Also inside the box was a crystal flower vase and two wine glasses. And the entire package was meant as something special to show the couple that they could face any obstacle that lies in front of them. And they could face it… and beat it… together.
And they pushed through nine years of marriage without opening it, and when they did, they were not fighting… they were actually thinking about what they could DO for another couple. And they both agreed that it was, indeed, the best possible wedding gift any couple could ask for.
