While rummaging through the trash in Edmonton, Canada, Gillian, a homeless man, found a ratty, old framed picture of Bambi. So he did what he had done in the past a few times… he took it to Archibold, who owns the Curiosity store a few blocks over. They had done business before, with Gillian finding old things in the trash and Archibold giving him a little money for it.
When Gillian presented the Bambi picture to him, Archibold game him 20 bucks for it, and believed he might be able to get a hundred dollars for it himself. But after Gillian left, Archibold took the Bambi picture out of its frame and, within that frame, there was a certificate of authenticity. It was a hand-drawn cell dated 1937, and Bambi didn’t even hit the theaters until 1942.
When Archibold put the cell up on eBay, it fetched $3,700. With that, he KNEW he had to find Gillian and give him half of that amount, after deducting fees and such. He was finally able to track him down and handed over to him $1,600. He then gave Gillian an extra hundred dollars and bought him lunch.
A very shy Gillian said, “Wow, that’s awesome… I don’t know what to say.”
Archibold knows all to well the struggles Gillian and people like him face. Because there was a time in his OWN life when he too was homeless. So after handing Gillian over his share for the Bambi picture, Archibold set up a GoFundMe page for him, and it quickly hit its goal of $10,000. Soon after that, with all the news reports about the big find, Gillian was reunited with members of his family, who did not know where he was. And perhaps THAT is the best thing to come out of this.
